Like the new look of the site. As I always do, I found your discussion on electromagnetism very informative. Now I have a question.

My EMF meter measures from 0 to 5 milligauss. I’m sure its not the best meter out there, but here’s the thing. If I am outside, “and this has happened on more than one occasion.”
If I am outside in a given area with zero EMFs say at nine/pm, then I return to the same area at 11/pm and my meter is going crazy for quite some time. What am I measuring?
Keep in mind that the area I am refering to had no powerlines or other known source of emfs. You might say that it could be a radio transmission in the area and normally I would give this consideration. However, I have radios that I use on investigations and they have never influnced this meter unless within a couple of inches of it.
Even in a house, this meter dosn’t seem to be effected unless you are directly on the source. Given that this meter only measures zero to five milligauss, I wouled think that it would be easly effected by the slightest EMF.
Also during EVP sessions, this meter has been known to reflect EMFs during the session.
Again, what am I mesuring?

Ahhh… good questions, grasshopper. I will be talking about this during next week’s show, but I’ll go ahead and give you the short answer for now.

Milligauss is a measure of magnetic field strength. It was adopted as an alternative to the Tesla scale, due to the finer resolution of magnitude. So, what your meter is measuring are CHANGES in the strength of a magnetic field.

The meter uses a small coil of wire (inductor) to measure a changing magnetic field, due to the induced voltage that appears on the coil when it is near a time-varying magnetic field. This also explains why it is not influenced by nearby radios, and the necessity of close proximity to a mains source. The magnetic field generated by radios is (by design) much less then the electric field generated, and hence propagated as EM waves, in order to transmit over greater distances while reducing power consumption. (there is a lot more to that, but I’ll get into it next week)

As far as RF is concerned, there is always a possibility that readings are being affected by some source of RF (or low freq EM). Any semiconductor (like transistors in your meter) can be affected by EM waves of different frequencies and alter genuine magnetic field results. Most inexpensive devices are not properly shielded and thus contribute to the problem.

However, above all else, EM meter readings are not very useful without knowing the FREQUENCY of the fields being read. In order to do this, you need a meter with a spectrum analysis function. They are quite expensive, and I will give some suggestions regarding this issue next week.

As far as EM meters responding during EVP sessions: evidence suggests that there is a link between EM (magnetic and electric fields) and the production of EVP. I’ll talk about this, too… David is well versed in this as well.

OK, so that’s the short answer… I’ll be getting pretty deep into the subject both on the podcast next week and in the new Equipment pages. (see EM, Part 1 and 2 .. when I get them done) It should only be a couple of more days.
